Elina and Emil

Our love story began in the most modern yet unexpected way - with a simple conversation on an online dating site. I was living in Ukraine and Emil was in the United States, so from the very beginning, thousands of kilometers and an entire ocean separated us.

Neither of us knew exactly where our first conversations would lead, but it soon became clear that something special was growing between us. Messages turned into long conversations, conversations into feelings, and before we knew it, an ordinary online connection had become a serious long-distance relationship. We learned how to be present in each other’s lives despite different time zones, busy schedules, and the enormous physical distance between us. Eventually, virtual dates were replaced by real meetings, and every visit confirmed that our relationship was worth all the effort we were putting into it.

For me, the happiest moments were always those when I landed in the United States and finally saw Emil waiting for me again. But every beautiful visit also had an ending, and saying goodbye became the most painful part of our relationship. Each time I had to leave Emil in America and go back to Ukraine, it became harder for both of us to accept that an ocean still stood between our two lives. We tried to remain positive and remind ourselves that every goodbye was temporary, but eventually we realized we simply didn’t want to live from one reunion to the next anymore.

Emil knew exactly what he wanted, and he decided it was time to make sure our next chapter would be written together rather than on two different continents. His marriage proposal became the moment when all those years of distance, waiting, airports, flights, and emotional goodbyes finally began to feel worthwhile. I said yes, knowing that I was not simply accepting a proposal but choosing the man with whom I wanted to build my home and future. Our wedding was everything our long-distance relationship had not been — big, loud, joyful, traditional, and filled with the people we loved.

After spending so much time separated by thousands of kilometers, being surrounded by family and friends while celebrating our marriage made the day especially meaningful. Marriage finally gave us something we had dreamed about for so long: the opportunity to wake up together and share ordinary everyday life without constantly thinking about the next flight or goodbye. Sometimes we look back and find it almost impossible to believe that our family and everything we have built together began with a simple chat on a dating website.
